The president and seven teachers at the American Academy McAllister Institute—the so-called “Harvard of Morticians”— has been charged with attempting to steal answers to the “National Board Exam,” which certifies students to become licensed morticians. More than 300 AAMI grads have been old their licenses are no longer valid, including 94 in New York alone. “The industry is already short-staffed by 30 percent. This action will only compound the problem,” said Robert Ruggiero, executive director of the Metropolitan Funeral Directors Association told the New York Post.

Donald Trump might be complaining that American Manufacturing is being killed by trade imbalances, but in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, they’re making a machine the country can be proud of: The 1000 Pound Mortuary Lift. It’s an electronic device that allows for the careful and dignified placing of a body into a coffin. Considered the Industry Standard, the Mortuary Lift aids one of the hardest parts of the job. Katie Hill, the company’s owner, says that moving the body is when many funeral workplace injuries occur. “[A body is] heavy on one end and not on the other end – it doesn’t have handles. Not neat in a box. It’s a very difficult weight to lift and nobody’s helping. The person you’re lifting isn’t helping you.” She adds  The back is the number one injury in the funeral industry.”
