O-Bits: A Place To Bury Strangers Edition

From Ghana comes the story of man named Ebenezer, who is in a heap a trouble, even if he is  one ghost short of a carol. Ebenezer is a mortuary attendant, not a job that usually gets one chased out to town on a rail, but Ebenezer has been forced into hiding. That’s because a leaked video of him fondling the body of the late Ghanian dancehall star Ebony Reigns has gone viral, with the attendant outcry swift and harsh. But not from all precincts. Prophet Reindolph Oduro Gyebi commonly known as the Eagle Prophet of Ghana, thinks people are missing the “spiritual” aspect of the story.

According to the Prophet,  “the video was released by somebody close to her,” and that “the ghost of Ebony will haunt some people because someone close to her wants to tie her soul  (and) prevent the ghost from doing what she has to do.” We’re not sure exactly what that means, but we’re also not sure we want to take spiritual advice from a guy willing to appear on a poster next to someone named “OJ.” (Not the OJ, mind you, but still not a good idea.)

It’s one thing to lose a reservation for a restaurant table or a hotel room, but a gravesite is another matter entirely. Mark Edwards of Southampton, England reserved space to buried next to his sister, who died in 1999. But when he and his family paid a visit to her grave, they were surprised to find a freshly interred casket buried in his spot. The Southampton City Council, who operates the cemetery, mistakenly thought the family had ceded their reservation, and offered the plot to the family of Patricia Sutton. The Edwards took the matter to court, who refused to exhume Ms. Sutton. With the usual British talent for understatement,Matthew Cain Ormonroyd, the judge hearing the case, observed “I cannot avoid the conclusion that whatever the outcome of this case, one family or the other will experience a great deal of ongoing distress.”
