Musician/songwriter/producer Ike Turner was more famed for his marriage and musical partnership with Tina Turner than for his own musical accomplishments – a great irony, since he bullied and beat Tina throughout their marriage. Ike might have discovered Annie May Bullock – Tina Turner – in the 60’s, and made her famous through the Ike & Tina Turner Revue. But it was Tina’s voice and movement that really made them famous. Once Tina walked out on him in 1976 – she basically escaped his physical abuse, then sued for divorce – she went on to become an even bigger international star as a solo artist, buoyed by famous fans David Bowie and Mick Jagger – and Ike fell into depression an cocaine addiction. After he died in 2007 at age 66, Ike Turner’s autopsy and toxicology report showed he was taking the antidepressant Seroquel (also found in Robin Williams’ body after he died) – and it was revealed that he’d suffered from bipolar disorder most of his life.
